Far away from mainland Norway, the Spitsbergen archipelago provides space for polar bear, polar fox, glaciers, sea ice, walrusses, reindeer, thousands of birds in summer and people. Life in the main village, Longyearbyen is quite normal: there are shops, you can buy bananas, there is a swimming pool, schools, a vet and a university centre. It might just be a bit colder than anywhere else. And it is not allowed to go anywhere outside the village without a rifle.
The contrasts are enormous and it is clear that especially here we have to adapt to nature and not the other way around.
